The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra gets the Wirén Prize 2009
The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra has been awarded the 2009 Dag Wirén prize of SEK 100,000. The orchestra received the award during a concert, on 17 October in De Geerhallen in Norrköping. The award was presented by Dag Wirén's daughter, Annika Wirén.
- The 2009 Dag Wirén prize to be awarded the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra is
very honorable. There is evidence that the orchestra's high artistic level and
the estimated prize gives our musicians extra energy and strength to continue
to deliver outstanding results in the future, "said director Peter
Waldemarsson.
The Board's reasoning is this:
"The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra has long been an ensemble of great
national and international importance. The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra brings
Swedish music tradition and makes important contributions to the artistic
innovation.
When the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra with Thomas Dausgaard as conductor in recordings
make the first comprehensive interpretation of Dag Wirén's symphonies, the
result is brilliant. This further strengthens the orchestra's artistic position
and gives Dag Wiren deserved attention both in Sweden and internationally. The
recordings are a weighty contribution to the documentation of Swedish
orchestral music of the 1900s."
The Board of The Dag Wirén Foundation decided in 2007 to establish a Dag Wirén Prize.
The prize shall be distributed to individuals or institutions that have done
much to highlight the composer Dag Wirén's music. The award was first out to
the Stockholm Arts Trio on December 6, 2007, in the Wirén Hall of the concert
house of Örebro and 2008 was the prize was given to The Lysell Quartet.
